Hayate

PlayStyle: Neutral/ Screen Control

Similar to: Bishamon, Falke, Ryu, Yuzuriha

Strengths: Good overall normals, Can convert from any range with Kamaitachi, three varying angles of his Hisenzan, straight forward and strong combo structure,  difficult to zone and can neutralize all projectiles with Kamaitachi. Hayate has good mobility and has access to one of the best hard attacks in the game. He has a great counter that cause a juggle state and depending on your execution you can get great damage.

Weaknesses: Has trouble maintaining pressure after a knockdown and he lacks any unique mixups outside of a rare cross up Hisenzan off a throw. He also has some of the lowest damage in the game accompanied with supers that don't consistently work too well together.

Play if: + You like neutralizing all projectiles
+ You like a simple character with nothing too fancy
+ You enjoy having attacks with big reach

Avoid if: - You don't like controlling the screen
                 - You want a more complex character
                 - You don't like vanilla game play

Recommended Gougi Decks: Aggro, Stealth Raptor, Shinobi, Berserker, Thunderbolt, Juggernaut, Double Face

                            Max Punish Combos

Meterless: dash st.MK > cr.HP > HP Kamaitachi (50 Damage)

1 Meter: dash st.MK > cr.HP > HP Kamaitachi > Resshinkamaitachi (87 Damage)

2 Meter: dash st.MK > cr.HP > HP Kamaitachi > Resshinkamaitachi > late cancel Raizanshou (95 Damage)

3 Meter: dash st.MK > cr.HP > HP Kamaitachi > Resshinkamaitachi > late cancel Raizanshou > late cancel Tsumujikagerou Kyoku (105 Damage)

                                   Key Normals

Crouch Heavy Punch: Go to solid anti air and can easily go into Raizanshou for extra damage or Enrakushisho (back + HP) for a instant overhead.

Stand Light Kick: This is an excellent button to check dash in low with and to buffer into Kamaitachi or Oborozuki to whiff punish or counter poke an opponent. Kamaitachi will always connect from any range.

Enrakushisho: This unique attack is his best option to get a mixup situation even though it is not very rewarding. This being thrown in after an anti air or after a chain could catch some players with good conditioning on your part.

Crouch Heavy Kick: Completely safe on block and great to confirm into on block if you are too close for a safe Kamaitachi This sweep will also low profile projectiles and is a great whiff punish tool.

Stand Heavy Kick: This is your best heavy normal to use on block if you want to stay safe. You can hit confirm Stand Heavy Kick into his supers for more damage on hit. This can also be made more plus after a knockdown as a meaty giving you a free Crouch Light Kick into Crouch Medium Kick chain into his specials on a successful hit.

                                         Key Moves

Kamaitachi: It's your main chip tool and way to end chains somewhat safely depending on the spacing before you cancel. This move also destroys all projectiles including Sharon's Bullet projectiles and the HP Kamaitachi can slice D.Dark's bombs as well. While this is great for controlling space and checking dashes be careful for jumps as it is somewhat slow on recovery.

Hisenzan: Your invincible reversal option which also gives you three different angles based on the punch button used. Light is mostly horizontal, medium is a bit more vertical and heavy is almost at a 90 degree angle. This is also a great move to anti air with like Shoryuken's from the Street Fighter series.

Tsumujikagerou-Kyoku: His most unique super and it requires the most care when used as it can be very punishable especially on hit if you are near the corner. The way to use it best is to be as close to the ground as possible because you will recover faster. Often it's not best to end on this super because he gives up having a oki option but if you need the extra damage for the round then it's always worth it.

                                 General Strategy

Hayate's strength is in his Kamaitachi special and using it to control space and making your opponent hesitant to run in and focus more on jumps to approach. He cannot control the screen the whole match so mixing in offense and having bursts of it is key to Hayate's success. He does lack damage so combo efficiency and good meter usage is key to unlocking Hayate's potential. His pressure and oki game is somewhat vanilla so his flavour will change quite a bit based on your deck choice.
