Fighting EX Layer is a fighting video game developed by Arika. It is a spiritual successor to Fighting Layer and the Street Fighter EX series and features many of the same characters from the latter. The game was released for PlayStation 4 in June 2018, with ports for Steam/PC and Arcade released the following November. A mobile version of the game, titled Fighting EX Layer -α, was later released for iOS and Android devices in April 2019. Although the beta has almost totally different gameplay from the main game on console and arcade.

FEXL was originally teased on April Fools and many people took it seriously and lots of fighting game fans voiced their praise and hopes that it would be made into a full game. The official reveal of the game was at the large fighting game tournament of Evolution 2017 with this trailer on Sunday finals.

The game has been through a lot since then releasing more characters and content, such as Pullum, Vulcano Rosso, and teasing Terry Bogard, Area, and Sharon.

With fan and community feedback Arika made a port of the game on Steam and later on added a spectator mode for streamers and players to run tournaments and to be able to spectate matches.

The biggest update however was August 1st 2020 in which Arika added ROLLBACK NETCODE into the ps4 and pc/steam version offcially. Beta testing for rollback was happening on PC prior for about 1.5 months with constant feedback and testing from the players and community.

Arika also mentioned crossplay will be coming shortly after more internal testing AND skins will be allowed in the PC version with mods. Arika has voiced that they always want to add more content so we'll have to wait and see what else is in store for Fighting EX Layer. Unfortunately it seems like due to budget they won't be able to implement crossplay currently.

Arika on April Fools Day (April 1st 2021) released Fighting EX Layer: Another Dash. A reinvention of the original Fighting EX Layer that is available only on the Switch. Somewhat of a sequel to FEXL like Street Fighter 2 to Street Fighter 2: Turbo, there has been no news of Another Dash coming to other platforms or if any of the updates will be coming over to the original FEXL. Visit the another dash page for more info.

Gameplay Overview

Fighting EX Layer is a fighting video game played in a 2.5D environment. Battles take place in closed arenas, which vary in size and width. The gameplay retains many of the mechanics from Arika's previous fighting games, such as super cancels and juggling, while adding a new running mechanic similar to King of Fighters series. Additionally, the game features ground chain combos(similar to Guilty Gear and Marvel Vs Capcom and Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid), an auto-combo system( for beginners that can be turned off in the options), and an optional Progressive mode which simplifies command inputs for special moves and supers. Fighting EX Layer also introduces gougi decks, which grants players additional bonuses, extra abilities, and enhancements during a match. These boosts can be customized by selecting different Gougi decks before the match begins. Similar to Capcom vs SNK 2 Grooves or Street Fighter Alpha 3 Isms.
